La Casa de Esperanza Cancels Cinco de Mayo Youth Event

Waukesha, WIS. – Under the recommendation of the Waukesha County Public Health Division, La Casa de Esperanza canceled its Cinco de Mayo Celebration in an effort to help prevent the spread of Swine Flu.

"La Casa de Esperanza´s decision to cancel the event is strictly precautionary," says Meghan Sprager, the agency´s director of communications and fund development. "We believe that it is in the best interest of our stakeholders and the greater Waukesha County community to minimize large crowd contact to prevent the spread of the disease. We greatly appreciate community support of this important decision."

The 2009 Cinco de Mayo Celebration was scheduled for May 5. Approximately 500 children in Kindergarten through 12th grade from six different schools throughout Waukesha County were registered to attend the event. All registration fees received will be refunded.

Currently, there is no plan to reschedule the event for this school year. Schools registered to attend the Cinco de Mayo Celebration will be given the first opportunity to register for La Casa de Esperanza´s Dia de los Muertos event in fall.

La Casa de Esperanza has been working with the Public Health Division and the Waukesha County Swine Flu Taskforce to monitor and prevent the spread of the disease. The agency plays an integral role in helping to communicate with the county´s Spanish-speaking population.
